Car thives found!!!!

The Central Crime Station (CCS) has been rounding-up known car thieves, a move which has brought down four-wheeler thefts. All car thefts in the city are investigated by the CCS automobile team. The sleuths have been regularly summoning known offenders. CCS teams have stepped up surveillance on more than 100 active car thieves and ex-convicts. Non-bailable warrants are being issued against those who are not turning up at the CCS office, officials said. The CCS is also ensuring that most offenders remain behind the bars.

“Known offenders are rounded off regularly and questioned. CCS teams have stepped surveillance on car showrooms, second dealers and workshops as well,” CCS automobile team inspector G. Jogaiah said.
In 2004, 178 car thefts were reported in the city. The figure was down to 124 in 2005, 108 in 2006 and 68 cars so far this year. It is mostly small cars that are stolen in the city. Most of these are often parked in the lanes and bylanes of residential colonies due to lack of parking space. CCS officials said that the modus operandi of thieves is to open car doors using fake keys or various tools. They said that stealing a small car was a cakewalk for professionals because of lack of safety features.

Population in State to reach 10cr by 2041

The State’s population is likely to reach 10 to 10.5 crore by 2041 if the two-child norm is followed, says the Population Reference Bureau of United States. Interestingly, PRB says that the State’s population would actually decrease if the fertility continues to fall. The State’s population was estimated to be 7.62 crore in 2001. In the first scenario the population would touch 11.4 crore by 2101. In the second, it would be 8.8 crore. Andhra Pradesh constitutes 7.41 per cent of India’s population. By 2101 it will constitute only 5.23 per cent. Life expectancy will increase from 64.6 to 83.7 in 2101.

Auto passenger beaten to death

A passenger who was beaten up by the driver of a seven-seater rickshaw driver and his associate at Neredmet on Sunday succumbed on Monday. Police said D. Srisailam, 65, a vegetable vendor of Kakatiya Nagar, boarded the vehicle with his friend Vijay Kumar to go to Neredmet.

At Neredmet crossroads, the driver reportedly told the passengers that it was last halt. Srisailam insisted that he proceed further for which he was ready to pay extra. Police said the driver did not agree and a heated argument ensued. The driver and his assistant beat up Srisailam, pushed him out of the vehicle and fled. Vijay Kumar shifted Srisailam to a hospital where he succumbed to injuries while on Monday while undergoing treatment. An investigation is on. The passengers had not noted down the number of the vehicle, police said.

Concentration on public places by cops

Following the blast in a Ludhiana theatre, the police has shifted focus to the security of theatres and public places. After the Mecca Masjid bomb blast, the police issued a notification on two occasions on new licensing condition for theatres, multiplexes, malls and shopping complexes.

Police put a rider that the licence was subject to installation of surveillance cameras, doorframe metal detectors, cloak rooms for deposit of belongings and bags, and sufficient number of security personnel to conduct frisking and keep tabs on suspicious elements. But police found that compliance levels were low.

"After the Ludhiana incident, all inspectors have been instructed to ensure that theatres comply with the condition. We will focus on security at public places with more vigour," said city police commissioner Balwinder Singh. "The Buddha Purnima Project Authority has been directed to comply with these conditions on roads abutting Hussainsagar," said Mr Singh. He added that foot patrolling would be carried out by policemen to instil confidence among citizens.

The police has dispatched 90 slides to theatre managements to create awareness among the public. There are plans to produce a short film on the subject. The lack of a pattern in the terrorist attacks carried out in the city has meant that the police is concentrating on the security of all places where there are large crowds. The office of the joint commissioner of police (security and coordination) has asked the five deputy commissioners of police to see that policemen in mufti keep tabs at crowded places. Police officials appealed to the managements to attend the security training classes being conducted by the City Security Wing at the DCPs’ offices on holidays

Nokia battery explodes

A Nokia cellphone battery explosion was reported in the city on Tuesday morning. However, nobody was injured. The cellphone that exploded had a battery in the 4C series while Nokia had last month issued advisories only about the BL-5C series batteries. The incident took place at the residence of N. Harsha at Sagar Society in Ameerpet.

Mr Harsha, who runs a software company from his residence, said that he had left his Nokia N72 cellphone for charging. After some time he heard a loud sound and noticed smoke and a foul smell, Mr Harsha said. He assumed that it was emanating was from his computer, but upon checking found that his cellphone had exploded. Tuesday’s incident was the first to be reported from the city, there were reports of cellphones exploding from other districts.
