Barista Coffee Pub

Perhaps the perfect antithesis of Coffee Day, Barista(Barinchagalama) is just as loved for exactly the opposite reasons - it's quiet, almost mellow, and actually encourages conversation. A lot more could happen over coffee here than where that tagline rightfully belongs.

Even though you will spot the occassional group of college students at Barista, the place sees more working people and, on weekends, even families - they also have a high-chair for infants. Barista is the most expensive coffee shop in town, so it's rarely crowded on weekdays and you have all the privacy and sunlight you need to chat endlessly, read, or play a game of
Pictionary. They're also quite encouraging of budding musicians and the guitar hanging on the wall sparks off some impromtu jam sessions, during which you will hear at least one soulful rendition of Hotel California. You have to sing this song when there's a guitar in the vicinity, there's a law about it.

Barista also serves up some treats that you will not find at any other coffee shop, and its range of sandwiches and cookies are very popular. For hot coffee, many people prefer the Cappuccino, the chocolate-stirred Cafe Mocha or Cafe Latte, which is a double-shot of expresso with milk. The cold coffees are yummier, but a lot more expensive. The best ones are the Frappe,
Brrista Caramello, with caramel blended in and poured over cold coffee and whipped cream, and the Brrista Blast, with irish cream, chocolate sauce and fudge. But for that extra something try the Brrista Bite, topped with whipped cream and a crushed chocolate brownie.

You will also find Earl Grey and and other Twinings tea, which go very well with the cookies - must try the cinnamon and wild berry. The Chocolate-Chip Muffin is also a delight, especially with hot coffee. For a bigger snack people prefer the Smoked Chicken or Paneer Tikka Sandwich. Team it up with the Peach Iced Tea, which is great for a summer's afternoon.

Barista also has some great desserts. Okay, one great dessert - the Chocolate Excess, a warm, melting, sinful slice of dark chocolate cake with a scoop of virginal vanilla. Hits the spot like a charm when you're down and blue.

Barista is not a grab-and-away kind of place, you will want to sit over your coffee for while, insulated against the traffic whizzing outside. Except for the large groups, who, by the way, are totally incongruous with the setting, everybody here does their own thing, in their own peaceful coccoon. With a friend, a crossword puzzle or simply a mug of steaming hot coffee for
company.
